Revision

Here's a guest post I stumbled upon worthy of sharing - about revising your work.Guest post by Kiki Hamilton
Revision is hard work. There’s no two ways about it. But it is necessary to improve the story – sometimes it’s the way the writer finds the real story. Though there can be times when it feels like the process of revision never ends – it doesn’t have to be overwhelming.
I like to think of it as making a cake. You have to work in layers.
The first layer is the plot structure. There are lots of different ways to draw out the plot or story arc of your novel. I use a color-coded Excel spreadsheet, others use sticky notes – either way is fine – as long as you have some way to see the overall scope of the story.
Divide your story into acts:
• Act 1 is the set-up: identify your characters and the conflict.
• Act 2 begins with a Turning Point which results in rising action.
• Act 3 the conflict increases until it reaches a Point of No Return. This is where we know what the character wants.
• Act 4 begins from the Point of No Return and we rise to the Crisis, which is where we learn what the character needs. From there we move to the Resolution and The End.
The second layer includes: characters, theme, emotions, plot. Once you’ve got your structure in place, take a look at the elements that create your story: Characters, Theme, Emotions, Plot.
Are your characters three dimensional? Is your protagonist well-developed? Do we care about them? Is there a theme present in the story? Here’s a big one for me – is the plot believable? Do the protagonist’s choices make sense?
The third layer contains the supporting elements. This is the time to look at side characters, dialogue, scene transitions, and pacing. Are the side characters necessary? Do they get enough time on stage? Do your characters speak in a believable way? Cliffhangers are great but make sure that when you move from one scene to the next, or one chapter ending to a new chapter, that you do it in a way that your reader can follow the timeline and sequence of events. Also, it’s hard to look at your own work objectively, but try to see where the pace of your story drags and where it might move too quickly.
The final layer is the details. This is my favorite part of the revision process. I like to think of it as putting on the beautiful sparkly frosting.
Make sure you’re showing and not telling. Show us what the main character is thinking and feeling through description and actions. Provide fresh, original details. Use vivid verbs and phrasing so that when the character’s heart races, ours does too. And finally, drop in those last little details that will set your work apart from others.
Revision is hard work but it is this part of crafting a story that will make the reader remember your characters long after they read ‘The End’.

Edit, Edit, and Edit Again...

One thing I've learned about the whole editing process is that once you think that you're done with editing your manuscript, think again. After a while, you get bleary-eyed and miss a few important catches. The next time you re-visit it, you will see I'm right. Most of us can't afford to miss any errors. Now, I simply set it aside and come back to it, starting from the beginning again, and read it aloud to myself (of course when no one is around). When you hear the spoken word you can spot the ones you've missed.

A Great Blog to Follow!

For all of the writers out there, struggling to get an agent, like I am, I came across a wonderful blog that is very helpful in finding new agents. Just passing it on to my fellow writers to check out. http://anitanolan.wordpress.com/author/anitanolan/

Cover Crazy hosted by The Book Worms

Cover Crazy is hosted by The Book Worms it is a weekly meme. Admiring Book covers what the meme is for - showcasing the prettiest covers you can find!

This week I'm crazy for ....

Okay, so I’m promoting my own cover. I just couldn’t pass on this. The cover artist did a fabulous job! I just love the way she took my idea and ran with it. The magical hands are hovering around a magical moon or crystal ball. The background has that electrical, magic feel with an air of mystery about it and the left hand holds the magical amulet that helps the main characters travel back in time. Awesome!
With a magical amulet in hand, three friends are whisked back in time to the Salem Witch Hunts, a terrible time in U.S. history. When Tituba, the Paris' slave, secretly teaches the children a lot more than housekeeping, like voodoo, fortune-telling, and spell casting, it leads to utter chaos in the village. Ultimately, Emily, Megan and Ben uncover a hidden secret which may alter the course of history.
Can they get the villagers to see what's really causing the fits and tantrums before they get accused of being witches themselves? Follow the friends on a fantastic adventure as they uncover a mystery when they travel back in time.

Following Blogs and Leads

The very important "following of blogs" plays a big part of networking. Going through the hundreds of emails I get daily, I follow each link and read info and connections that people have made. Through all of this I have found out things such as how authors got their agents, who their agents are, where they are located, and how to get in touch with the agent. I've also read all about how they went about their book signings, giveaways, and social networking, linking to writer's critique groups and blog groups. All of this is building a stronger platform, and helping me make connections that are making a difference one step at a time. It's amazing. I just had an agent email me who absolutely loves the premise of my work and is very interested if I make my book 10,000 - 12,000 words longer! That's a lot of writing. But anything goes in the world of getting noticed.

A Thousand Words

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Let's turn that around a bit. As a writer, if you can take one moment in time, like a picture, and turn it into a sensory overload, you would have a great piece of prose. Stretch that special moment out, describing what your senses are taking in - how the character feels, what he/she sees, senses, touches, smells, tastes - you know what I mean. Then you have taken one special moment and made it into virtual reality. What a great way to get your readers involved. A great tip to expand your writing!

Writer's Groups Help

For years, my writing friend told me that she belonged to a writer's group that consisted of Romance Writers. She encouraged me to join a group because it really helps when you critique each other and you grow as a writer. And for years, I was always busy and didn't want to make time for such a thing. Now that I have time on my hands, I have joined She Writes, like I mentioned. I honestly didn't know what I was missing. It is so comforting to talk with a group of like-minded people. They are actually going through the same stuff I am going through. We help each other out with our writing, give suggestions, critique and support. I've actually been becoming a better writer! So I encourage you to do the same if your passion is writing. Hook up with a writer's group - you'll thank me.

Magic by Moonlight Book Trailer

Check out this SlideShare Presentation:

TEEN DIALOGUE

Food for thought - I've been reading a lot of teen dialogue in tons of popular books in the local bookstores lately. It's been a real eye opener. Using current lingo really makes the characters come alive. Using phrases like... come on, you're kidding me, right?, unbelievable, you're pulling my chain, etc., etc., really hits home with the young kids. I'm going to revise some of my newest manuscript to include some of the lingo. I'm going to stay away from the derogatory ones like... that frigging thing and more. It's just not my style.

Be Careful What You Wish For is Republished through Createspace

Hi Fans,
Just to let you know, my first book, Be Careful What You Wish For , now has a new cover and has been re-published through Magic Moon Press via Createspace. I'm really excited! Working with this new publisher has been a great experience. The reprinted version has more than 20 more pages of text, not in the original book. I got a chance to revise the story too. Lots of new scenes and a whole new chapter too.
Can't wait for you to read it.

The second book in the Amulet Series, Magic By Moonlight is doing well! Thank you for all of your support. Sales are climbing every day, and you are making that happen! I am working on getting it made into an e-book for Kindle and Nook. The sky's the limit!

E-books for Children?

D. L. Cocchio , author of Magic By Moonlight said...

As a former teacher, I truly believe there is nothing like having that paperback in your hands, but with the technology of e-books and Kindles, often families will get an e-reader for the whole family to share and will download books for their children. Why not take advantage of a good situation to get your kids reading!! Currently I am working with Amazon to also offer my books in Kindle Format. You can check out my books at: http://www.dlcocchio.webs.com/

Changing a PDF file to HTML

For about a week now, I have been trying to figure out how to change a PDF file to HTML since you need to have an HTML file to make an E-book or Kindle. I've tried by searching the Internet for tips or programs and ended up downloading free programs that wouldn't work. After uninstalling those programs, I stumbled across the answer on a Technical Blogger's site: http://www.labnol.blogspot.com. His blog post basically said to use your Gmail account to send your file to yourself at Gmail. When you open it up, click "view as HTML" link next to your attachment. Then save it to your harddrive. But you have to edit that file in the end because the conversion takes out all of your indents and photos. It was so easy. Hope this helps some of you out there!

Two Good Sites for Book Reviews and Recommendations!

Learning a lot about using social networking to promote a book or whatever product you have. One great site I came across is http://bookblogs.ning.com and the other is www.goodreads.com . Both are great networking sites and give tons of helpful info on books, like recommedations and reviews. Check them out!
